A fine Shinto, Edo period (1603-1780) Japanese Wakizashi. The 52cm blade in original untouched polish has a fairly deep sori (curvature) and the Hamon is of Ito-suguha (narrow and straight) in form. The Nakago (tang) with plain copper Habaki has one punched mekugi ana (peg hole) and is signed 'Nio Kiyotsugu'.
The hilt has a tsuka covered in ray skin with two golden menudo in the form of dragons under brown silk Tsuka Ito wrapping. The kashira is of black buffalo horn and the Fuchi in the Goto school style is of shakudo with open fans and gold inlay decoration. The Tsuba is of blackened copper and is decorated with raised leaves and lotus flowers.
The saya (scabbard) is of polished black/brown lacquer with a fitted Kodzuka with a handle decorated with a crab in amongst seaweed.
