A gold filled costume brooch signed 'van dell' and marked 1/20 12K GF.
'Gold Filled' refers to a process where a layer of gold has been fused to each side of a base metal. To be described as 'gold filled' an item has to be one twentieth gold by weight and the gold thickness is normally much thicker than with gold plating. The process is similar to 'rolled gold' however 'rolled gold' can be less than one twentieth of gold by weight.
Van Dell jewellery started in the USA in 1939 and often used 'gold filled' material to produce items resembling fine jewellery, rather than base metal often used in costume jewellery. Van Dell items are quite collectable but can be somewhat rarer, harder to find and command higher prices.
The brooch offered here really sparkles in the light and is in excellent condition. A lovely item from a recognised collectible brand.
This item is available online only however if visiting the Antiques Centre please visit Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view other collectibles including items of silverware and Moorcroft Pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern examples.
