Top quality, unique, original commission, large bronze sculpture of the racehorse Epinard by Georges Malissard (1877-1942). Marks to base, ‘G Malissard 1923,’ ‘Epinard,’ and stamped ‘Cire Perdue, C. Valsuani.’ Together with custom made black painted hardwood base with silver plaque to front engraved ‘Epinard, Winner of the stewards cup, Goodwood 1923.
Owned by Pierre Wertheimer, Epinard won 12 races including The Stewards Cup with American jockey Everett Haynes.
Georges Malissard was a renowned French equestrian sculptor with regular exhibitions at the Salon des Artistes Francais. Claude Valsuani was the premier founder producing works for many famous artists including Rembrandt Bugatti, Alberto Giacometti, Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin.
Very good condition, light brown patination with moderate wear. Base restored.
