A very scarce British Hussar / Light Cavalry Officers Sabre from the reign of King George III. The steel stirrup guard with langets is a variation on the 1796 pattern light cavalry hilt. The grip is of wood covered with shagreen (shark skin) and bound with triple silver wires. The sabre was made by 'R.Johnston late Bland & Foster Sword Cutler & Belt Maker to his MAJESTY 38 & 68 St James Street LONDON' (Note, this information is engraved within a cartouche on the rear of the top mount of the scabbard). This manufacturer is recorded to have been at this address between 1798 to 1806.
The highly curved steel blade is plain for its entire length and is single edged.
The scabbard is of black leather and in sound condition withe three ornately designed steel mounts and two suspension rings.
Given its age this sabre is in very good condition overall.
